The Internal Revenue Service announced on Tuesday that it will delay the start of the 2014 tax filing season by as much as two weeks due to delays caused by the recent closure of the federal government.

The were scheduled to begin receiving returns on January 21, 2014 but now say the earliest possible date will be January 28, 2014 and no later than February 4th. The official start date will be announced in December. I will post that information here as soon as the IRS announcement comes out.

Our office, however, will be able to process your return for you in early January and get it into the que. That way when the IRS portal opens your return will be one of the first to be sent in.

Unfortunately it appears that we are going to have to deal with the Affordable Care Act this year at tax time. Because of the growing government reporting requirements that we must fulfill on your behalf for 2013, and the additional staff time needed to complete it, we must increase our preparation fees to cover our costs.

In order to help you to offset some of that cost we are implementing a client referral program. We will issue you a check for $10 for each new client that you refer to us and we prepare a tax return for. There will be three coupons for you to give to your friends and family members.

Many happy returns,

Jim Bellon
